IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS IN TENNIS INSTRUCTIONALS - AN OPINION

By TennisTom 2010

At the risk of repetition, I want to point our two major considerations involved in tennis instructionals. These two indicators form the fundamental basis for my website and my forthcoming manual, whose working title is: TENNIS FOR MOST EVERYONE.

Singles vs Doubles. The first consideration is that most instructional writings are written for singles play instead of doubles play. This is unfortunate for the normal player because at least 95 % of the tennis playing world plays Doubles. Doubles players need doubles instruction. There’s a huge difference in the two games.

Target Audience. The second and more egregious consideration is that most instructional materials are aimed at high level tennis play. This is less than smart, a euphemistic phrase, because the overwhelming majority of club or recreational players cannot play like the pros. In fact most of us cannot even get remotely near the timing, pace, and control that collegiate or pro level players have. Recreational and club players need instruction which is intelligently fitted to their capabilities.
